Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic, is also a public speech writer. She created Feminist Frequency, a site with video content and blogs analysing the way women are depicted in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a blogger, journalist and award-winning feminist for more than a decade. Feminist Frequency, a website dedicated to education, which examines women's roles in popular culture, is directed by Sarkeesian. Dispelling stereotypes of women is the main goals of her organization. However, Sarkeesian also seeks to bring attention to problems like discrimination and harassment of women in the online world. With a master's in the field of political and social thinking from York University Sarkeesian is also popular as a public speaker and she has delivered talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival and the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. She has been interested in the gender issue and feminist movements since at a very young age. When she was in 2009, she was still at the University of Toronto, Sarkeesian created the site Feminist Frequency. The ambitious lady planned to start a web-based series that would examine gender representation in video games. However, she found herself the victim of a cyber-bullying campaign. However, this did not hinder her. This only helped her as a feminist journalist. Her work has earned her numerous awards to recognize her significant contributions to the world of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian is an award awarded media critic, and director of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization exploring the role of women in pop-culture storylines.
